Are you ready for the snow?
The average annual snowfall for Minnesota ranges from 36 to 72 inches. This past week the State experienced a small taste of what is to come. We never know what the Winter holds for us, but if the snow is very wet or falling intensely, it can be a major inconvenience. More importantly, it could present a major huge health threat. Our goal is to help you face some of those challenges safely.
If you are not active throughout the year, you should not use the first snow event as the starting point for your new exercise plan. Dress warmly, in layers, and approach the task wisely. Or entrust the shovel to that neighbor boy or girl looking for an extra job!
Snow shoveling tips.
The National Safety Council provides cautions about shoveling. Performed carelessly, you could sustain serious injury, or even death. The following guidelines apply whether using a shovel, or a snowblower (which often provides an illusion of greater ease).
- Do not shovel after eating or while smoking
- Take it slow and stretch out before you begin
- Shovel only fresh, powdery snow; it’s lighter
- Push the snow rather than lifting it
- If you do lift it, use a small shovel or only partially fill the shovel
- Lift with your legs, not your back
- Do not work to the point of exhaustion
How can massage help?
Have you ever given much thought to the physical act of shoveling? Shoveling will work your upper body (chest, shoulders, arms, and back), lower body (quads, hamstrings and glutes), and also offers great opportunities to engage your core muscles.
Our Healthy Touch massage therapists are the perfect antidote to sore and overused muscles. Booking a massage is as easy as picking up your phone and calling 612-872-3330. If you prefer online booking, just go to our website or click here!
The holidays are also a great time to thank that special one picking up the shovel on your behalf. Consider the gift of a massage, or of a Triple-Play package. Again, you can take advantage of our online portals.
